The egg.
It begins beneath the leaf litter. A female lays her clutch — about 350 eggs, sometimes 600 — under decaying grass and leaves, and dies. Two to four days later, the eggs hatch.

The lovebug is a harmless march fly of the family Bibionidae. It does not bite, sting or carry disease. It reached Florida in 1949, spreading east from Louisiana and Mississippi, and twice a year it fills the air in tandem pairs — the only reason most people ever notice it at all.
Almost everything about it happens out of sight. Adults live a few days; larvae spend months in the soil, quietly breaking dead leaves back into earth. This is the whole story, from clutch to coupled flight.

Act I · Days 0–4

Act II · Days 4–124
The long, dark middle. For four months in summer — eight through winter — the larva feeds on rotting leaves and grass in the top layer of soil. It is a decomposer, returning dead plants to the earth. This is where a lovebug spends almost all of its life.
Act III · Days 124–133
The rebuild. Sealed in a pupal case, the grub is taken apart and reassembled: wings, six legs, a pair of compound eyes and a burnt-orange thorax. Seven to nine days later, an adult climbs out into the light.
Act IV · Days 133–137
Four days in the sun. Flight begins once the air warms to about 68°F. Males hover in swarms; a female flies in, is seized, and the pair leaves together — tail to tail — for two to three days of coupled flight, feeding on nectar as they go.
Flights peak in April–May and again in August–September, each lasting a few weeks. Swarms surge mid-morning and toward dusk — any time the air is warmer than about 68°F.
The spring generation. Eggs laid now become the late-summer flight, about 120 days later.
The larger flight. Its eggs overwinter as larvae for roughly 240 days.
Lovebugs did not evolve for traffic. But to a female searching for a place to lay her eggs, a busy road is a near-perfect impersonation of the one thing she wants: rotting vegetation.
Females are drawn to UV-irradiated aldehydes — a major component of automobile exhaust, and chemically close to what decaying plants give off. Sunlight on a traffic jam cooks up the very scent that says: lay here.
Flight starts around 68°F, and heat itself attracts lovebugs. Hot engines, sun-baked asphalt and idling cars concentrate the swarm exactly where you happen to be.
Swarming peaks in the late morning and again in the early evening, when light and temperature line up. Their busiest windows overlap neatly with ours.
Freshly splattered lovebugs are almost neutral. Within a day the residue turns acidic, and a day or two of sun bakes it into the finish. Wash it off promptly and there is no damage.
The story that lovebugs were genetically engineered to kill mosquitoes is a myth. They simply extended their range from Louisiana and Mississippi across the Gulf States, reaching Florida in 1949 and spreading through the peninsula over the decades that followed.
They fly coupled for days, feeding on nectar as they drift.
The male dies first.
The female settles beneath the leaves, lays her eggs — and dies.
